Major Park Planned for Man's Best Friend

St. Charles County is designing what will be the biggest dog park in Missouri, boasting some 50 acres for dogs to run free, chase frisbees or jump in a lake. 

“They weren’t born on a leash,” says Parks Director Ryan Graham. “Dogs are programmed to run. They want to do things. They want to be with other dogs.”

Sundust Preserve will be located north of New Melle on 68 acres of land donated to the County by the late Mary and David Wolk. The Glendale couple had used the property to train golden retrievers. 

The County Council in August approved plans to spend $146,000 on a contract with an Iowa firm to design the park. 

“You’ll be able to take your dog for a hike through the woods,” Graham says. “There will be trails, lakes, and some dog playground equipment such as ramps and tunnels they can enjoy.”

Graham says construction could begin as soon as this winter, with the clearing of trees to create an open space for the dogs. The park could open as soon as late 2027.

“We've got a lot of people in St. Charles County who have dogs,” Graham says. “Bringing them out to parks is a big part of their lives.”
